The Juréia-Itatins Ecological Station is characterized as one of the best protected and preserved stretches of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, which has a very diverse flora and fauna, with a large number of rare species and several regionally endemic ones. The territory is bathed by rivers that are formed in the mountains and hills of the station and that dominate a large part of the coastal plain. The main basins formed are the Rio Verde and the Rio Guaraú.
The Ecological Station is one of the last places in São Paulo that is home to sandy beaches, rocky shores, mangroves, restinga forests and lowland, hillside and highland forests, in addition to being one of the few remaining areas to harbor a rich and diverse fauna, with the presence of some endemic species and some migratory species.
