Iguape is home to approximately 70% of the protected natural area, which includes the Chauás Ecological Station and about 85% of the Jureia-Itatins Ecological Station, in addition to being partially in an Environmental Protection Area (APA Cananeia-Iguape-Peruíbe). In addition to this complex of ecosystems, its Southeast Atlantic Forest reserves were listed in 1999 by Unesco (the United Nations agency for culture), being considered a World Heritage Site.
