The Carlos Botelho State Park is one of the most important wildlife refuges in the southeastern region of the State of São Paulo, being one of the most significant ecological corridors that connect the most important remnants of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. In its territory, the following endangered fauna species also stand out: jaguar, tapir, peccary and muriqui. Possibly, the Park is one of the only conservation units to house the muriqui monkey (the largest primate in the Americas) and the black lion tamarin.
